Located 200 kilometres north east of Melbourne, the King Valley is a 3-hour drive from Melbourne. There is an excellent Freeway and you travel in comfort by Rolls Royce, or another car from our luxury range.

Wine styles

Italian wine making influences this region producing distinctive and interesting wines. The full spectrum of grape varieties, including a number of lesser-known varieties such as Temperanillo, Nebbiolo, Barbera and Sangiovese are grown and blended.

The Alpine Valleys is home to a cluster of wine-makers that produce predominantly fine cool climate Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.

The King Valley soils vary considerably but fertile rich red clay loams are widespread.

The landfall varies from flat in the North end of the valley to high altitudes in the South end of the king valley that favour a lighter table wine production.

The picturesque Alpine Valleys region is made up of four valleys all with fertile soils and providing a range of altitudes.

  • Leave Melbourne CBD at 8:30 am
  • Morning Tea at Harvest House Avenel
  • King Valley North end Wine tastings at 2 wineries
  • Lunch 1.30pm
  • King Valley South end Visit 2-3 wineries
  • Arrive at accommodation in Whitfield 4pm
  • Dinner - regional food and wine served in your residence.

Day two

  • Wine selection - King Valley wine regions VictoriaDepart Whitfield 9.00am
  • Travel into Alpine Valleys Region
  • Tastings at 2-3 wineries in the Ovens Valley 9.30 – 12.00
  • Lunch at Mt Beauty 12.30 – 1.30pm
  • Tastings at 2 wineries in the Kiewa valley 2.00 – 3.30pm
  • Return to Melbourne around 6:00 pm.

Restaurants, accommodation and other ideas

Small Bistro’s, Cafe’s and local Pubs use the best of fresh, top quality produce available - with cheeses, berries, nuts, olives, beef, venison, game and lamb all raised locally. Italian and Spanish influence is in the food.

The selection of venues for lunch and diner can greatly enhance your wine experience, by offering you the opportunity to taste the wines of the region matched to fine food. We are able to advise you on establishments where regional wines are well represented on the wine lists, staff are able to guide your wine selection to match your food and, wines can be ordered by the glass allowing you to experience a more than one wine with your lunch.

Small Bed & Breakfast cottages and self-contained houses with wonderful views are some of the lovely options for your break in the valleys.
