Wine and our landscape

Australia’s diverse landscape means rich geological and climatic variation for our winemakers, who now rank as the biggest exporter of wine.

Australia has a formal naming system for its wine regions, and uses the terms “states”, “zones”, “regions” and “sub-regions”. Melbourne Wine Tours uses this system.

Tasmania’s cool southern climate produces excellent Pinots; the famous South Australian Cabernets are born in the rich Terra Rosa of the Coonawarra, the Barossa and Clare Valleys produce Majestic Shiraz; the fertile Margaret River area in Western Australia gives us complex Cabernet, fine Chardonnays and Semillon-Sauvignon Blanc blends.

Victoria is the smallest mainland state, yet it has more wine regions than any of the other states. The rich diversity of Victoria’s soil and climate means that visitors can experience a large range of wine types, including award-winners, within easy driving distance of its capital city, Melbourne.

Australian wine makers

The history of Australian wine production also reflects the diversity of immigrant settlers, who introduced winemaking techniques to this continent. Today Australians continue to learn from these great traditions while exploring the unique qualities of our regions.

An industry to be proud of

Grape vines arrived at Sydney Cove with the First Fleet in 1788. Since then, wine making has flourished in Australia, and our wines enjoy an acclaimed international reputation.

In 2005, our wine industry earned close to three billion dollars in export dollars. 166,000 plus hectares of vines produced around two millions tons of grapes, and almost 670 million litres of fine wines were exported.
